"Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it." - Publilius Syrus (~100 BC)

On the other hand...

"A ripoff (or rip-off) is a bad deal. Usually it refers to an incident in which a person pays too much for something. A ripoff is distinguished from a scam in that a scam involves wrongdoing such as fraud; a ripoff, on the other hand, is in the eye of the beholder. A scam might involve, for instance, a scheme in which a person pays $20 for a startup kit related to stuffing envelopes for a living, but the kit never arrives; upon receiving the money, the recipient flees. A ripoff, on the other hand, might be a business opportunity in which a person pays $375 for bulk vending machines worth $75. The fact that the advertised product actually arrives – even though it is worth far less than the purchase price – makes it a ripoff, not a scam." -Wikipedia

I really don't understand this kind of thinking. What's your logic?

First of all, people getting ran doesn't hurt you or anyone else in the slightest. It's a service that has supply and demand, and it's been "okayed" by Anet. Everyone has multiple characters, and most of us have completed the campaigns several times. How is it cheating to skip to the end-game content by getting ran? That's like saying "buying greens is cheating because you didn't get it as a drop yourself."

I agree with the previous post on the difference of ripoff and scam. The OP might have been charging a little more than the consensus deems fitting, but there was no scam if the conversation went the way he says.

5k does seem a bit expensive. But then there's a huge difference between expensive, and scam.

And I don't think GW has the worst community ever, we have the same community as everyone else. Alot of the same folks that used to play WoW are here, and vice versa. It just seems like we have the worst community here because we hang out here all day listening to the same anti-anet complaints over and over again.

Hasn't it always been 5k or at least a good majority of the time? And yeah, there is a huge difference between overpriced and a scam.

Lol @ people thinking it's a scam to charge what you want

E.g.
GAME sells GW for £29.99 yet Play.com sells it for £9.99

Is GAME scamming cos they charge £29.99? Should I run into GAME shouting "You scamming n00bz"?

If the price is too high then don't buy. A scam is when you don't get what you paid for!

[Edit] This forum is so slow is ridiculous. Does it have any bandwidth?

The problem is that way too many people don't know the meaning of scam. Chalk it up to willful ignorance or the failure of our educational system. Perhaps both. The average person who starts screaming "scammer" is a complete moron anyway.

I always remember thirsty river being 5k or more. I even remember seeing people charge 10k around when that run first started.

Running is a business. If the customer don't like the price then he should fine another runner.

Lets say all the droks runners band together and set the price per run 20k. That would outrage the community. If they stand firm on there price then the community would have to take it or leave it. It's their time and effort so the runner should set the price. So I don't believe it's a scam, it's what their time is worth.

Remember you can always do the mission or run yourselfs.

-live and learn-

I guess if you can't beat them you join them..

running is a service, does that make Killing a business? or is it vice versa?

so I guess it's time to put on my running shoes and do it for...4.5k?

Dont get me wrong, im not saying "dont do it". I personally just dont agree with being run places. However Im not telling people not to, because its their choice how they play the game.

Primarily I feel that way, because I have legendary cartographer and I explored every inch myself, alone without any help. I just feel that if I can do that, other people can too!

But I also respect the fact that long standing players dont want to play through missions just to get around. I appreciate that too, i've been there and done it myself...

...i'm also being a slight hypercrit, because I got run to Droks on my necro to get max armor years ago. But only after I got 100% on my ele and I also went back and got 95% exploration on my Necro. So that made me feel better about it :P.

But I think that if someone is daft enough to be run and pay a "joint group free" then they deserve to get scammed. You just dont do that! You pay an individual fee, because if someone leaves your lumped with the rest of it.

The last time I had a run in Thirsty river it was well over 5k - but then that was before Factions was released so the price is no longer relevant, in fact it was by a Minion Master before the limit on minions. Even then, runs are worth what someone is willing to pay - if there is no one else there who is to say it isn't worth 20k to get it *right now*. That is how a free market works. I know I payed "too much" because few are willing to do runs during the times I mostly play - I'm forced to play at odd times for me, pay the cost, or suffer through the areas I want ran (normally I just suffer the areas I hate - I'm too cheap to pay for the runs).

I will tend to agree that the "WTB trade contracts 100g" is 99.9% a scam - few do not know their real cost that are wanting to purchase them. Those selling for amounts like 200g definitely know - it is more than the other trade items are worth yet way less than contracts. Can't say I would accuse you of scamming right off the bat, but I would inform people of what they are worth. I would also have to say that I have yet to find someone other than that poster who didn't really know their worth and yet wanted to purchase them. I've even had nasty PM's informing me I'm ruining their trade - well yea, wasn't that kinda the point of my saying something on local? It is then amusing to watch some of the scammers accuse me of scamming by saying they are worth so much (though that is easily checkable by anyone wanting to sell them -the quartermaster and the rare material trader are right there).
